Project: On-line Monitoring of Dnepr Water Quality Parameters

Project description

To obtain constant reliable information on the state of the Dnepr river reservoirs it is planned to set up automatic on-line measurement stations. Actually the water quality state is controlled  by means of taking samples once a week or month. This does not enable to reliably control the water quality, to detect polluting spills or accidents, illegal waste water discharges, dysfunction of sewage treatment plants, intensive development of phytoplankton and so forth. Further, it has to be taken into account that oxygen deficiency is encountered frequently only at night, when samples are not taken.

The installation of an automatic control station permits to supervise and register the following parameters continuously ::

·        temperature

·        oxygen

·        pH

·        electrical conductivity (EC)

·        global radiation (having an effect on temperature, oxygen and pH)

These parameters provide information on:

      •   effect of waste water pollution
      •   influence of weather (determined through global radiation) on the development of algae and plankton , and рH;
      • effect of oxygen production and consumption

If funding will be available in future the following additional parameters can be monitored:

    • water level
    • turbidity
    • registration of spectral absorption coefficient at 254 nm (UV-absorption to assess the organic load of the water)
    • nitrates
    • CO2, и т.д.

The  three project stages:

  1. Connection of measuring equipment with a PC and registration of data on floppy disc
  2. Data are transferred to CEMU once a day; in case of excess of the predefined limits, alarm will be sent immediately.
  3. Data are checked and published on the CEMU website

(For a more sophisticated system CEMU should apply for funds from Ukrainian authorities, or international donors!)

Tasks of the future project partner

      • Find a place for the installation of equipment near the river shore with heating, electricity and telefon line
      • Install a tube and a pump to deliver water from at least 20 m from the shore to the station
      • Control once a day the function of the system and clean electrodes as necessary at least once per week
      • Use results for its own purposes

Tasks of  CEMU

      •  Support the project with equipment and materials
      •  Train personnel for maintaining the function of the station
      •  Care about the data handling, calibration, statistical and graphical presentation of data
      •  Care about public awareness rising and Internet presentation

Both sides agree that the station will be run not less than one year and that this will be continued if not otherwise agreed upon. The equipment will stay propriety of the donor(s).
